A rare old Japanese cultivar only recently in US cultivation, prized enough back home to fetch eye-watering sums for a plant in a 6" pot. Evergreen shrub to 6-7 ft, with deeply lobed, glossy palmate leaves emerging gold in spring and settling to chartreuse, each irregularly bordered in dark green. Terminal clusters of whitish, alien-antennae flowers appear in fall, followed by black berries. Slower and more restrained than the species. Part sun to shade, rich well-drained soil, light to regular summer water. Hardy to around 15-20°F, zone 7 and up.
