One of the most attractive of the large grasses, these New Zealand natives form clumps, to 4 feet tall, of arching, sharp-edged green leaves topped in summer with nodding plumes of creamy white flowers on tall stalks to 8 feet, lasting well into winter. Handsome in the background or as a specimen plant in the garden. Tolerates wind, pollution and, it is said, deer as well. Sun to part shade. Tolerates heavy to well drained soil provided regular summer water where dry. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8, possibly 7.
